As a result of a conversation with a friend of mine regarding gearing I wondered if anyone has played with the sprockets sizes on the mt10 and if so what have you tried and what were the results? I remember dropping a tooth on the front sprocket of my old r1's and Fazers made a huge difference as they were slightly over geared but with the mt10 being wheelie prone anyway and the rear sprocket being two teeth down on the r1 I wondered if anyone had tried it the other way?

I bought a - 1 front sprocket for my SP as that is one of the mods that I do first on my bikes.
HOWEVER
I have never felt the need to install it. It wheelies off the throttle so easily that I think it would be unrideable if I went - 1.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th under power and 5th, 6th if there is a slight crest in the road.
Damn bike is bonkers 😂

Yes, I want to go down a tooth on the rear just to take the edge off 3rd gear - I want to be able to use full throttle in third without constantly dabbing the rear brake, I think the wheelies in third will annoy the crap out of me on the track. I also suspect dropping all the way back to R1 gearing may dull the performance too much. The problem is I couldn't find a -1 tooth rear MT10 sprocket for love nor money! One tooth on the front will be equivalent to three off the back - and my bike hasn't got much forward adjustment left - you will further shorten the wheelbase. Which is why I like the idea of -1 tooth on the rear which will put the wheel half way back to where it should be! (in relation on an R1) whilst retaining most of the entertaining punch of the MT10.

- 1 on the rear would be a good starting point then I agree

Personally I have no experience with MT gearing to offer on this. Tho, big boo who the other forum did have threads on this. However, I’ve kind of forgot about what folks did or thought. Tho, -1 front I think was regarded as real wheelie demo bike stuff And -1 rear more about lenghting the wheel base. Hope this helps

Yup, I am with you guys about dropping a tooth on the front....unless you want to save on front tyre wear even more than usual! I think the 42 tooth sprocket might be an interesting choice though as a halfway house. It might even improve the fuel consumption!

I have gone -1 on the rear as I do a lot of touring and the nearly 6000 revs at 80 MPH, was a little busy for me. I must say after dropping to the 42 rear, I prefer the gearing for all aspects of riding as 1st gear was always a little short and the front was always wanting to go skywards through 1, 2 & 3, where as now with the minus 1 rear and slightly longer wheel base, i can pin it from 2nd and only get a nice smooth power wheelie which lands itself still on full throttle.

I don't think dropping a tooth on the front of the MT would be conducive to keeping ones license.
It's hard enough keeping that black sticky bit at the front on the road at the best of times.
IMO I consider the current gearing to be ideal for a naked bike but would like to know who has fitted one and what they think.

Hi I have standard gearing on my 2016 mt10 which I find perfect for me. However my crazy mate has gone 1 down on the front and 2 up on the back with a gold chain to go with the rest of the bling on his SP. The antics he got up to on the Isle of Man this year had to be seen to be believed!
