Greetings everybody,
I did it. Several test rides on various bikes, but the MT-10 scared me the most.
April 2018, I bought a 2017 MT-10 Touring Edition in black - Simply The Best.
Over 10,000 very happy miles and counting.
The Good
Engine - to die for. Sounds like thunder and earthquakes
Engine Modes - 3 (rain) is good in town with a pillion (girlfriend doesn't want to be left behind), 2 is great for touring out in the country, going fast on narrower roads, 1 is amazing when you feel brave on fast wide roads. Biggest grin factor I know. Really confused when people talk of A and B modes. Just remember 1 is fast.
Dashboard - good, clear, easy to use and read. Colour would have been nice at this price
Cruise - good when it works. Rear brake was dragging which prevented cruise from activating; fixed with W40. Would prefer it to work in any gear at any speed - anyone know a fix for this?
Quickshifter - up only while BMW and others give up and down QS for years. A bit disappointed. I can change smoother manually, so rarely use unless solo and pushing on
Comfort seat - came with bike, it's good enough for me; hear bad things of standard seat
Heated Grips - I have the original Yamaha ones, they work well enough, though I'd prefer to cycle from off - lower - medium - high rather than the other way around.
Screen - good; can tour at 100mph on German autobahns all day long
Top Box - Got Yamaha to fit their big one (50 litres?) along with panniers (which the dealer did even though their websites say either top box or panniers but not all together). Makes the rear end drop when fully loaded with gf on - but I just ride slower
Tyres - fitted Continental RoadAttacks last year, good for how I ride (touring, fast A, B roads) and better than OEM tyres.
Added an X-grip phone holder on handlebars; great for satnav. Paid for Sygic app with European maps. I just found you can customise the display and include a lean angle display - pretty cool.
Room for improvements
Front brakes - never seem to bite terribly strong. I try not to use in anger, and roll off early before stopping. I hear changing the pads help - anyone know to which?
Handguards - don't seem to do anything for me. Might remove
SatNav thing - waste of space and removed.
Panniers - small, 20 litres?, very difficult to get off (rhs lock broke) but did come with waterproof inner bags which can be useful. Filled when touring with gf
Fuel consumption and tank range - yeah, everyone knows this. I easily get 10mpg more on a 1 litre S1000XR. But hey. The mid-range acceleration and sound justify this. I fill up twice to my mates one. Sigh.
April 2020
I love the bike and don't really have any gripes about it. To keep the engine stock, or get the ECU tuned? I worry a great bike could be made worse. But very tempted. Many people say smoother fueling and ever better mid-range is worth it.
Front suspension feels hard - any thoughts? Change the oil, or..?
Pillion footpegs too high - looking to lower these. Might try MT-09 / Tracer 900 ones
I dropped the bike on the rhs, and have minor cosmetic damage to many parts. Replacement is over 2 grand! So leaving alone. A bit late to fit R&G?
I read that changing the gearing, going from 43 to 42 teeth on the rear sprocket, will lower the engine revs which sound make touring a little better. Any thoughts?
Anyway, I'm stuck in south Germany and cannot travel outside of the country, but I'm enjoying rides down into the Alps and back. Great scenery: mountains still with a little snow on, rivers, lakes, forests - and smooth (let me say SMOOTH) roads everywhere. No potholes. No speed bumps. It's nirvana.
If anyone is in the area and whats to ride...
