Hi All,
Today I made a start on changing the plugs. Pulled the coils out, 1,2 and 4 are squeaky clean but number 3 has a bit of oil residue around it.
Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this?/what the cause could be?
Thanks.

I have this on no3 too.
Took it to two mechanics who said the same thing...
It is likely oil from a split on the rocker cover gasket so a little oil is getting into the hole where the plug is. The plug looks worse than it is as gets covered on the way out form where it pools.
If the actual contacts are ok, the bike isn't misifirng or running in three cylinders then they both said that is the problem.
It'll be sorted when I do the valve clearances in the spring.
I've been running mine like this for 14months.

So on further investigation I came to a similar conclusion. It has to be one of 2 seals, one on the rocker cover or one under the cam holder. I've ordered a set of seals.
The next issue was getting the rocker cover off, initially other than actually getting to it, it didn't look a problem. Radiator and throttle bodies off and the rocker cover finally came off! What a ball-ache.
Found all sorts of things I wasn't happy with whilst stripping it down.
Clutch cable routing is crap, cable is chafed all the way through the outer sheath down to the metal inner. Main loom on the left side of the frame running over the top of the engine has chaffed pretty bad on the rocker cover. Various brackets around the intake/headstock area corroded pretty bad already.
Not great considering its 3 years old and 15k miles.
Whilst its apart now I will do valve clearances and obviously a coolant change after taking the radiator off.

Update..
I now have all the seals I ordered.
In the next week or two when I get time I will be doing valve clearances, and removing the two front engine mounts to lower the engine forward to get the rocker cover back on. The gap simply isn't big enough to put the cover back on without snagging the seals.

Ditto on the additional issues you've found. Rad brackets flimsy and corroding as well as the header bracket clamps which I've since found out cannot change and need a complete set of new headers 😳. Worn clutch cable.

I've just had my 17 reg MT serviced at 22k and it had 6 valves tight, I believe they were mainly exhaust valves.
The garage also said the cam chain tensioner was faulty and after a long discussion of the pros and cons I've had a graves manual tensioner fitted.
I need to lie down for a while after paying the bill!

Was there a lot of rattles as opposed to the normal safe Yamaha tick tapping noises. Valves clearances in general are good but if move would go smaller clearances as a valves trend to stretchier to spring forces closing them. Ummm do i check valve clearance at 19000 miles or just ride on as bike is 100 percent.may be wait to 24000 miles.

Hi X Plane,
To be honest there were no more noises than normal. Weirdly the tapping noise seemed to have stopped the last 8k miles, possibly the tight valves stopped any valve train noise? I was surprised at the cam chain tensioner to be honest, but I looked at the part and it had failed.
I also have the rusty exhaust clamps, frayed clutch cable and a fair bit of rust on the brackets despite being anal with cleaning the beast.
Up to you on the valve check, I did mine early having read about tight valves on the mt09 cp3 engine. If you do it yourself be warned its interesting getting access as James has said.
Yamaha wanted £750 plus shims,my local independent charged me £530 with yamaha parts.
Cheers
Alex

Yeah loads and lots of bikes engines valve clearances noises reduce as hotter exhaust valve can stretch with miles and high revs and the clearance gap gets smaller. Too small a clearance would result in eventual loss of power as valves can overheat as they don’t contact with the valve seat to dissipate transfer their heat into to cylinder head. So your precaution maintenance service job is real good. MT-10 CP4 will run for many a mile as revs less than the already strong R1 CP4. Mine seems grand at 19k miles. Mine is not a daily commute use so I can look at mine at my leisure my self maybe next year / closer to 24000 miles. Thanks again. Cheers Noel
